Getting older in this labor market means looking for a new career. I got into my new occupation after a friend suggested I research how to become a certified property manager online. I was apprehensive as I had no idea about anything relating to real estate or property management, but neither did my friend. He spent thirty years working in a corporate environment before the bottom fell out of the economy and he found himself unemployable. He spent a couple of years trying to find work before settling into his current occupation as a property manager. He loves the work.
The best thing about this career is that it’s not going anywhere. You can automate a lot of jobs, but you still need boots on the ground in property management. There has to be an actual person who can run the properties and deal with the various problems that pop up with regularity. I got into the field thanks to a site that told me about the necessary steps to get certified and find employment. I was very thankful for the information. Looking back I realize I would have wasted a lot of time trying to figure this stuff out on my own.
I manage several apartment buildings and I find that this job is much better than my previous positions. Why? Because you are constantly dealing with issues, you are working with people, and your problem solving skills are constantly pressed into service. Most jobs you can learn in six months to maybe a year. This job requires me to learn constantly. You are never bored here. I’ve never felt this challenged while simultaneously feeling secure in my position. I would recommend this field to anyone who likes a challenge and is worried about there age keeping them out of the workforce.
